I am a Heritage Consultant working within the planning and development industry, with over 30 years experience in the sector.

I am currently spending much of my time working with Atkins Global providing support on Phase 1 of HS2 between London and Birmingham, although I'm still available for a limited amount of other commissions.

Before becoming an independent consultant I was a Director at CgMs, the UKs leading planning and heritage consultancy (now part of RPS), where I led the team in Cheltenham providing heritage planning advice to commercial clients.

Prior to this I acted as a freelance consultant to global engineering consultants Atkins, working on the environmental impact assessment for HS2 Rail, and held senior management positions within the UK's largest commercial heritage provider, Oxford Archaeology. I have managed heritage input on a range of projects from small domestic development to large scale and complex engineering schemes including London Crossrail, Stansted Airport (for BAA), the Baku to Cayhen pipeline (for BP) and London Gateway Port (for Dubai Ports World). I have experience of development in sectors including infrastructure, housing, urban regeneration and utilities/renewables and have provided consultancy advice to a range of private and public sector clients.

After studying archaeology at the University of Birmingham I have undertaken post-graduate study in law and business administration. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (having previously served as Vice Chair), and an Associate of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. I recently acted as Chief Executive for the Federation of Archaeological Managers and Employers.

Specialties: heritage planning advice, desk-based assessment and heritage statements, environmental impact assessment, project management, heritage marketing and business development.

I combine an enthusiasm for seeing the best possible heritage solutions with a practical and pragmatic approach focussed on understanding what my clients are trying to achieve.

If you think I may be able to help you, please get in touch

Based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Hawkes Edwards is a RIBA Chartered Practice working on projects across the UK. Founded in 1955 the practice has always specialised in historic buildings and new build within a heritage setting, with the majority of projects based around either the sympathetic adaptation, alteration, conservation and repair of listed buildings or new buildings within a conservation area.

We value careful and conservative repair, and believe that the alteration and re-use of these buildings is best informed and inspired within a strong design environment. Our focus on strong concepts ensures alterations are of a high architectural quality, allows heritage buildings to continue to be relevant and give historic sites a vibrant sustainable future.

Our work often involves resolving challenging planning situations with creative and sensitive design solutions. We have developed our reputation in succeeding where others have failed, by achieving designs that work for both clients, conservation professionals and planning authorities. We believe our success is a result of our commitment to continually developing our range of experience and expertise and building strong long term relationships with our clients, their buildings and the other specialists we work with.

Much of our work involves meeting the challenge of fitting a new building or use into an historic or sensitive setting, or unlocking the potential of a site where planning policy or environmental constraints threaten the scheme proposed. Recognising the importance of sustainable design, the practice works hard to introduce sustainable materials, renewable energy and low carbon technologies alongside traditional heritage materials and craftsmanship, for timeless designs to last a lifetime.

The practice is lead by the Principal Trevor Edwards along with Associates Andrew Warner and Greg Bicknell, who lead a dedicated team of Architects, Technologists and Project Managers with a wide range of project and conservation experience.

Hawkes Edwards are conservation accredited with membership of the AABC and are members of the PassivHaus Trust and the Green Register.

Tim Floyd Tim Floyd MSc MRICS - Professionally, I started out in civil engineering – surveying for road and pipeline construction. Thoroughly disillusioned, I took a relatively early hiatus, and over a number of years travelled widely throughout Russia, China and SE Asia, regularly visiting the most extraordinary buildings, returning periodically to generate funds through building work in UK and France.

In 1991 I found myself on the roof of one of the temples at the Angkor Wat Complex in Cambodia (long story). Below me, a couple of French surveyors were recording the structure, as the area had recently been made relatively safe and international funding made available for conservation. This was my ‘light bulb’ moment and I subsequently completed a BSc and MSc in Building Conservation Technology and Architectural Materials Science.

I later worked with Brian Ridout at Ridout Associates as a building conservation scientist and surveyor for nearly 7 years. During this time I was lucky enough to work with various high profile buildings, both secular and ecclesiastical and became chartered via the ‘Building surveying research’ pathway at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Whenever I can find the time, I love: to cycle (cotton shirt and shorts, not lycra and lid), to read, to watch films, rugby and South Park on TV and walk our dog Frank the sprocker.

Deborah Gardner trained as an Architectural Technologist and has over twenty years experience in the building industry. It was whilst working as a technician that she was introduced to the world of conservation, engaged as part of a team refurbishing Lewes Crown Courts and historic buildings owned by the Ministry of Defence.

From that point Deborah became passionate about the South East’s built heritage and has worked exclusively in the field of conservation, particularly within the field of repair. Whilst employed by professional Architects and Building Surveyors Deborah worked as Contracts Administrator on behalf of English Heritage, on numerous monuments within East Sussex & Kent, and private clients producing drawings and specifications for the consolidation and repair of masonry and timber-framed buildings.
Debbie Abs

Having gained academic qualifications in Building Conservation and becoming an accredited member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, Deborah launched her own company, DGC Historic Buildings Consultants in November 2002.

Almost immediately Deborah’s extensive technical knowledge of traditional materials and methods were recognised and she became historic buildings consultant to a number of Local Planning Authorities within the area, appointed to advise on planning and listed building applications, assess information in pursuant of the discharge of conditions, provide training and advise staff within Development Control and Building Control as well as contractors and owners of the implications of works, either repair or new build to the historic fabric.

Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd believes it can provide expert advice for practically all questions that arise in relation to buildings and the built environment – especially questions that fall outside the usual professional boundaries.

CAR was set up in 1987 by researchers from the Martin Centre, the research division of Cambridge University’s Department of Architecture. The founders were motivated by seeing that many academic research ideas fail to connect with real world problems where they are needed. CAR’s mission was – and still is – to boost the contribution of research and analysis to the design and management of buildings and the built environment.

The membership of CAR has changed since 1987, but the nature of the organisation remains very much the same. It is an independent consultancy set up as a limited company owned by its members. It operates as a flexible, collaborative, multi-disciplinary group of experts, forming teams to respond to each new project that comes into CAR.

The skills within CAR are diverse. We have classified them under four service areas – Buildings & Cities, Structures, Energy and Risk. But we know that every project is different and the most interesting projects often cut across the categories. Working with CAR associates and a network of specialists who collaborate on a project-by-project basis, CAR’s project teams bring together the particular mix of skills required for each project.
