Our members' generosity enables us to fight for the Victorian and Edwardian buildings people value. Every day, we work to protect Victorian and Edwardian buildings from demolition and destruction.
Our Conservation Advisers, guided by experts on our Southern Buildings Committee and Northern Buildings Committee, help local planning authorities and churches to avoid needless harm to Victorian or Edwardian buildings. The reuse of our wonderful historic buildings, rather than wasteful demolition and rebuild, is key to a sustainable future. Our input has saved landmark buildings ranging from St Pancras in London to the Albert Dock in Liverpool.
We run numerous events and visits, developed by our events committee, and publish books, journals and a membership magazine to entertain educate about our subject. The Victorian Society is an IHBC recognised CPD provider.
We have regional groups which run their own events and campaigns, click the links on the right hand side of this page find out more .
Join the Victorian Society to be at the front of the battle to save our heritage. Our members’ support is crucial to our work, every member matters in the fight to save the buildings we cherish.
We’ve been fighting to protect historic buildings since John Betjeman and Nikolaus Pevsner among others founded The Victorian Society in February 1958. Their aim was to preserve Victorian and Edwardian architecture and encourage research into the art and history of the period. You can read more about our history below.
The Victorian Society is a registered charity in England and Wales. Charity number 1081435.

Antique Buildings Ltd is an award winning planning and architectural consultancy, celebrated for its commitment to conservation and design. The salvage yard at Antique Buildings carries an immense stock of ancient oak beams - protected from the weather in their 100ft by 50ft storage barn. Wide oak floorboards (suitable for laying over underfloor heating) are a particular speciality - whole floors, laid in the various re-erected buildings, are open for viewing. The salvage yard also offers diverse stocks of handmade bricks, roof and floor tiles, stone paving and unusual heritage items.
The company's name 'Antique Buildings Ltd' was chosen back in 1983 to reflect the company's specialisation in saving ancient timber framed buildings; there are always a number of complete ancient barn, cartshed and granary frames in stock ready for re-erection. The frames have been drawn, photographed and numbered before being carefully dismantled for re-erection. Should you need help with design or re-erection. Managing Director, Peter Barker, works on the ethos that there is a use for everything - visitors will leave with inspiration from examples of innovative reuse.

After 35 years in the Reclaimed Wood industry, we know a lot about old and antique timber. In our 13,000 sq. ft. workshops we receive and restore huge stocks of reclaimed timber, including original period floorboards, 12 species of parquet woodblock, and our signature reclaimed wide oak planking. We have in-house kilns and the capability to fully engineer our boards so that all our floors - even those made from unique antique timber - can be installed over an under-floor heating system or floated on top of concrete sub-floors.
We specialise in retaining timeworn surfaces. The aged patina and texture evident in old, reclaimed floors, offers designers a softer, more lived-in effect, that works with older buildings or indeed adds to many contemporary spaces. We achieve this by hand DA sanding, each board to retain the wear and character that is unique to it and all antique and reclaimed wood.

The Hamish Ogston Foundation was established in October of 2019. Philanthropy has long been an important part of Hamish’s life; from 2008 to the registration of the Foundation, Hamish donated over £8.5 million to numerous causes.
The Foundation’s underlying principles are key to the approval of its donations and the outcomes that are expected from them. Although small donations with little or no oversight can be impactful, the Foundation opts for a different approach.
This strategy welcomes initiatives that promise long-term sustainability, maximal financial impact and measurable social outcomes. Drawing on the commercial acumen and subject expertise of the team, successful applicants can expect a minimum investment of £1.5m and close cooperation with the Foundation over a number of years.
