Churches with round towers are unusual: they are found mostly in East Anglia.

The Round Tower Churches Society (RTCS) was established in 1973 to help preserve these churches and to explore their origins and history. There are 186 in England including those in a semi-ruinous condition and visible remnants of fallen towers. All are in East Anglia except for three in Sussex and two in Berkshire. Norfolk has 131, Suffolk 41, Essex seven and two in Cambridgeshire, according to the leading architect and authority on round tower churches, Stephen Hart.

Most are medieval, dating from the 11th to the 14th centuries. Some pre-date the Norman Conquest.

In the past 47 years, the Society has made grants of over £250,000 to help many of the English round tower churches. As a registered charity, the members subscriptions and valued legacies are greatly appreciated.

Support the Society and enable us to continue to provide grants for these churches.

Join yourself or give a year’s membership to a friend – go to Society. For information about recent grants and work in churches visit Grants.

Rose of Jericho was founded in the late 1980s in the period immediately after the ‘lime method', developed by Eve and Robert Baker, was employed so successfully for the repair and conservation of the figure sculptures on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.

These were exciting times, born of the recognition that non-permeable mortars, plasters and paints were inappropriate for, and indeed often accelerated the decay of our built heritage.

The use of lime was a near-forgotten practice, as cement mortars, gypsum plasters and non-breathable emulsion paints had become the norm. Building construction books and courses only mentioned lime as a workability additive for cement mortars.

This had to change !

Roger Mears Architects believes that architecture is the key to enhancing our clients’ experience of daily life.

Our philosophy is to create beautifully crafted buildings that reflect our clients’ styles and personalities, within an historic context. Our work is guided by SPAB principles, with a focus on conservation and sustainability –caring for traditional buildings using a modern approach.

Each project is unique with its own story of its journey through time. We help uncover each building’s distinctive features, which determines careful and meticulous repair. Where required, we add to the narrative of the building by designing new features, additions and extensions derived from the original details, but in a 21st- century idiom. Each repair is honest in detail, and each addition is designed to ensure that the building is enjoyed by another new generation.

A selection of our work from our 35 year history is displayed in the Projects section, with some shown below.

Hanslip & Company Ltd is an RIBA Chartered Practice, here to help with every aspect of historic buildings: condition surveys, repairs, alterations, re-ordering schemes, new build, heritage consultancy and advice, reports, co-ordinating other consultants and trades, compiling and assisting in grant schemes, and any issues that arise from using a historic and community hub.

Hanslip & Co was formed as HMDW Architects in 2007 through the merger of Russell Hanslip Associates and CMA Architects. Both practices were founded in the early 1980s and have built up similar expertise in working with church and community clients on projects for new buildings, extensions and alterations to existing buildings, and repair and restoration of Listed buildings. Projects range in value up to £6 million, and are located throughout London and the South East of England.

Much experience has been gained in most areas of conservation and restoration of Grade 2, 2* and 1 Listed Buildings, the oldest of which dates from 1086, the Chichester Office itself. Conservation knowledge has been gained partly through specialised courses and partly by extensive experience. Members of the practice are on the AABC (Architects Accredited in Building Conservation) Register and RIBA Conservation Register.

AABC: The Register of Architects Accredited in Building Conservation exists for the benefit of clients and the structures they are responsible for.

AABC is an independent accreditation body established in 1999 for and by skilled conservation architects. The primary purpose of the AABC Register is to protect the historic built environment from damaging interventions devised by people not skilled in historic building conservation and adaptation. It does so by publishing, for the benefit of clients, a register of architects whose work and skills in building conservation have been established by peer assessment moderated by a lay assessor representing the client.

There are no charges for clients to use the Register. The scheme is self financing – all successful applicants pay an initial and annual registration fee which covers the costs of a part-time Administrator, the website, and the administration of the assessment processes. The AABC Register is not subsidised by commercial or professional organisational sponsorship.

With well over 400 building conservation accredited architects on the AABC Register, our open access website is designed to assist you to locate and engage an architect whose experience in building conservation and adaptation is assured by a rigorous assessment process.

This is based on the individual’s on-site experience, and is assessed by a volunteer team of two AABC registered architects and one conservation conscious non-architect, usually from a client background. The lay assessor focuses on the applicants’ client-friendly aspect, especially their ability to communicate clearly, concisely and comprehensively to a non-architect.

To achieve successful AABC Registration, architects submit details of 5 examples of their work completed within the last 5 years, illustrating their professional expertise and demonstrating their experience of building conservation and adaptation. The opportunity is also provided for applicants to demonstrate their insights, understanding and application of the building conservation principles codified by the International Council On Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). All AABC registered architects are re-assessed every 5 years.

There are two categories of AABC Registered architect to distinguish between architects accredited as “hands on” designers and deliverers of building conservation and adaptation -and those who act in a “hands off” capacity such as in a consultative, educational or advisory role. The latter are distinguished by the initials CA - Consultant Architect.

In the selection of an architect for a particular commission it is always important to have met the individual, know more about their experiences with similar projects, resources, personal qualities, managerial skills and reputation. It is normal for them to provide details of their practice and projects or assignments carried out and for a potential client to see the latter and make appropriate enquiries.

Full details of the AABC Register’s processes, procedures, application forms and advice to applicants – including key competences and the ICOMOS core conservation principles - are accessible to all on the website.

AABC also operates a Mentor scheme which offers a structured programme of mentoring and guidance to younger architects who wish to become accredited.
