Our members' generosity enables us to fight for the Victorian and Edwardian buildings people value. Every day, we work to protect Victorian and Edwardian buildings from demolition and destruction.
Our Conservation Advisers, guided by experts on our Southern Buildings Committee and Northern Buildings Committee, help local planning authorities and churches to avoid needless harm to Victorian or Edwardian buildings. The reuse of our wonderful historic buildings, rather than wasteful demolition and rebuild, is key to a sustainable future. Our input has saved landmark buildings ranging from St Pancras in London to the Albert Dock in Liverpool.
We run numerous events and visits, developed by our events committee, and publish books, journals and a membership magazine to entertain educate about our subject. The Victorian Society is an IHBC recognised CPD provider.
We have regional groups which run their own events and campaigns, click the links on the right hand side of this page find out more .
Join the Victorian Society to be at the front of the battle to save our heritage. Our members’ support is crucial to our work, every member matters in the fight to save the buildings we cherish.
We’ve been fighting to protect historic buildings since John Betjeman and Nikolaus Pevsner among others founded The Victorian Society in February 1958. Their aim was to preserve Victorian and Edwardian architecture and encourage research into the art and history of the period. You can read more about our history below.

As with the majority of pro-active businesses operating in the shared market of Britain and Ireland, Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd has been monitoring the on-going Brexit negotiations and has determined that significant changes are required in order to de-risk the sustained development and growth of the company within the new emerging economic environment. We have restructured our business to create two distinct operating companies which will operate within the restructured political and economic jurisdictions which will emerge in early 2021. This strategy will protect the fantastic track record we have built in Britain and Ireland and allow us to develop and strengthen the services we offer to our clients on both sides of the Irish Sea.
Red River Archaeology Ltd, a new UK registered company commenced operations in March 2019. Where possible, existing contracts have been novated or sub-contracted from Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd to Red River Archaeology Ltd. The new company is under the directorship of Mark Collard, Dave Gilbert and Claire Shepherd and our UK based staff have moved over to the new UK company. So, business as usual with a new name and logo!
Both companies are wholly owned subsidiaries of Red River Archaeology Group Ltd which is an Irish Registered Company. Red River Archaeology Group Ltd will provide overall strategic direction and other core services to the operating companies in the UK and Ireland.

Railways in the first half of the 19th Century made the Industrial Revolution possible. They were the agents of a great upheaval in Britain, bringing wealth and new opportunities to agriculture and industry, making it possible to do business across great distances, creating the conditions for cities to grow, allowing remote areas to become vital ports and industrial centres, and employing multitudes of people in steady, reliable employment. The railways were the largest agents of economic and social changes in those times. The mobility they gave to the British people has never been lost. Although such a continuous and major upheaval did not find favour with all – the gentry were nervous of how access to travel raised the aspirations of ordinary folk and the romantics, like Wordsworth objected to the changes – the contribution the railways made to life in Britain was huge.
150 years later, there has been significant change, and we are experiencing the Electronic Revolution. These changes seemed to be outmoding the railways at first, but now the demand for rail transport has begun to swell again. High speed city to city passenger use is now higher than the levels of the ‘golden years’ of the railways, and the energy efficient nature of rail encourages the belief that the relevance of railways will continue to grow in the future. During those 150 years there has been much change, and some of the important and iconic items from the past have been allowed to disappear.
However, in 1985 British Rail set up the Railway Heritage Trust as an independent company, to assist the operational railway in its preservation and upkeep of listed buildings and structures, and to facilitate the transfer of non-operational premises and structures to outside bodies willing to undertake their preservation. This was so that valuable railway items could remain with us and be looked after, both when they are still in use and when change has removed their operational utility.
Upon the privatisation of the railways, the Railway Heritage Trust was maintained, and Network Rail and the Highways England (Historical Railways Estate) now sponsor the work it does. The job of safeguarding the assets, passed down to us all those years ago, is carried out with enthusiasm by the Trust, working with individuals, main line and heritage railways, conservation bodies, local and central government, and anyone else involved in the job of keeping past, present and future in harmony.
On this web site you will find details about how the Trust works, who its Directors and Officers are, what is in and out of scope for the Trust and how to apply for a grant from it. You can also find the most recent Annual Reports, which show the projects the Railway Heritage Trust has most recently undertaken and give its financial results; finally there are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the Trust.

We are a community of Architects, Masterplanners and Heritage Consultants. By continually reimagining places within urban and rural landscapes across the world, we unlock value and create sustainable futures for our clients’ sites. We research, analyse and then masterplan, survey, conserve and repair, adapt and refurbish, design, extend and build new within complex contexts. We understand the values embedded in these places and how to build a successful case for change.
We work to the highest standards within our client’s aspirations and budgets. This is the most satisfying and rewarding way of working. It is because the places on which we work matter so much that they demand design and intervention that does not compromise what has come before. Working like this requires resilience, energy and creativity to make the most of the opportunities we are given.

At Priory Heritage we are passionate about the preservation of historic buildings and believe in a future for all listed and historic buildings.
We support Historic England’s ‘Constructive Conservation’ approach to maintain our ancient buildings but on occasion allow them to change to develop alongside modern needs.
After carefully evaluating significance for each structure we ensure any changes are undertaken sensitively and with consideration for preserving the best of what has been created by previous generations. We believe alterations and repairs should always be done to the best of our ability and provided our work is of the best quality we should not be ashamed of the contribution our generation makes to the history of English Architecture.

Inspired by the role Great Britain played in the First World War, Harkness wished the funds to be used for some of the UK’s ‘more urgent needs’. Such a brief would be unusual today but over the years it has given the Trustees the flexibility to fund charities that address such ‘urgent needs’ or the UK’s future wellbeing. Currently the Pilgrim Trust has two grant-making programmes that focus on preserving the UK’s heritage and catalysing social change through which it awards grants of circa £3 million a year.
Our Preservation and Scholarship fund aims to preserve the fabric of historically important buildings and to conserve significant collections and artefacts. We want present and future generations to enjoy the rich and diverse heritage found throughout the UK. Find out more here.
Our Social Change fund aims to support the life chances and wellbeing of vulnerable people in the UK. After a strategic review in 2020, we have announced our new funding programme: Young Women and Mental Health PLUS. The programme aims to help improve the mental health of young women (16-25) in the UK through increasing their access to high quality, age and gender specific mental health services.
The Pilgrim Trust gives grants for:
- Preservation of and repairs to historic buildings and architectural features - special consideration is given to projects that give new use to buildings of out-standing architectural or historic importance;
Conservation of monuments or structures that are important to their surrounding, including buildings designed for public performance.
- Places of Worship: a block grant is made to the Historic Churches Preservation Trust, the Council for the Care of Churches and the Scottish Churches Architectural Heritage Trust. The Trust does not normally make grants direct to historic churches, other than in Northern Ireland. To apply under our block grant allocation scheme please contact the relevant administering organisation directly.
