The Stonehenge Alliance is a group of non-governmental organisations and individuals that seeks enhancements to the Stonehenge World Heritage Site (WHS) and opposes development that would cause it significant harm.

The Alliance is a not for profit organisation that relies entirely on donations from campaign supporters and the voluntary efforts of activists.

Through its Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site campaign, the Alliance is concentrating its efforts on opposing the proposal for dualling the A303 including a short tunnel across Stonehenge WHS announced in December 2014, which would result in serious damage to the WHS landscape. This action includes our petitions to the Secretaries of State for Transport and Culture which continue to attract supporters from the UK and around the world.

The Stonehenge Alliance supported the Save Stonehenge WHS Ltd legal challenge to the road scheme and will continue to do so if necessary.

We raise awareness of the likelihood of Stonehenge’s loss of World Heritage Site status and its wider impact should UNESCO’s advice continue to be ignored.
We have:

Hon Sec Dr Kate Fielden at National Trust AGM in 2017

- lobbied government at all levels and all relevant departments,
- held challenging dialogue with Highways England, the promoters of the road scheme,
- collaborated with over 90 members of the National Trust who object to the scheme,
- engaged with campaign supporters from over 100 countries, represent all walks of life and backgrounds, hold a variety of beliefs or none and yet are united by the spirit of the World Heritage Site, and
- supported and helped to raise funds for Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site Ltd’s successful legal challenge to the Transport Secretary’s decision to grant a Development Consent Order for the road scheme in November 2020.

Together, our supporters and Alliance partners express the truth about the World Heritage Site’s Outstanding Universal Value.

We believe that these actions are effective and have caused government to be concerned about our wide reach.

Hot mixed air lime mortars, with or without small volumes of pozzolanic addition, were the ubiquitous lime mortar of traditional construction around the world, only falling from general use as the 20thC wore on, when the use of Portland cement or hybrid Portland cement and industrially produced dry hydrated air lime mortars displaced them from most building sites. This shift coincided with the growing disempowerment of masons and other crafts in the industry. Previously, mortar design had been the domain of the craftsmen, and wherever they were in the world, they chose to use hot mixed air lime mortars.

These mortars were the most economically made; they were quickly and efficiently prepared (by a variety of simple methods) and delivered mortars of eminent workability and usefulness. They enjoyed unparalleled water retentivity and excellent bond, and displayed maximum cohesiveness and adhesiveness.

All of these properties were shared with traditional earth-lime mortars, a mortar of similar ubiquity, which had dominated masonry construction throughout Europe and the Middle East before the 18thC and which were still commonly used for bedding mortars and base-coat plasters across the Americas even into the 20thC. Hot mixed lime and traditionally slaked lime putties were always used in conjunction with these.

Hot mixed air lime mortars, with suitable pozzolanic addition according to purpose, are eminently breathable – they have a vapour permeability more than twice that of a typical NHL mortar; they are much more effectively porous than other mortars and keep building fabric dry. They are durable and frost resilient in a properly detailed traditional building and are easy to prepare and deploy.

Hot mixed lime mortars are truly like-for-like and are compatible with all traditional fabric in ways that modern Natural Hydraulic Lime simply is not. Natural Hydraulic Limes were not much used for building in the air before the later 19thC – they were used, if at all, for water and underground works and for concretes. They were not available in North America unless imported from Europe, although natural cement was produced and was used for similarly wet situations, or as a gauge to otherwise hot mixed mortars in thick-walled military construction during the 19thC.

London Historians was founded in August 2010 primarily to act as a facilitator which:

- enables all those interested in London’s history to find what they’re looking for quickly and in one place
- provides a hub for the many dozens of disparate institutions and societies and thousands of individuals, all of whom have a common interest
- supports conservation and historical research
- encourages both amateur and professional historians to meet and make new friends with like-minded enthusiasts

Belonging to London Historians is very much a shared experience. We can only be as strong as our membership. We hope you’ll join us for what we’d like to make a perpetual adventure, exploring the history of our amazing city.

The director of London Historians is Mike Paterson, who abandoned his career in the software industry to set up and run London Historians. Mike is a BA(Hons) history graduate from Royal Holloway, University of London, class of ’93. “I am grateful to many Londoners – long-standing and brand new friends alike – who have all chipped in with ideas, work and encouragement to get this off the ground. As our membership grows, I’m certain that that London Historians will be much greater than the sum of its parts. Just through doing the research to set up our web site, I’ve become hugely more knowledgeable about London’s history than I ever was. But what I look forward to the most is making new friends who share my curiosity about our city’s past. It’s a never-ending process.”

British Spirals & Castings has earned an enviable reputation for producing high quality spiral stairs, straight staircases, balconies, gates and railings at competitive prices. Our recognised service levels attract customers from all round the world and our family ethos ensures a pleasant experience from start to finish.

We also specialise in the manufacture of bespoke made to measure products including gates, railings and security grilles, and the manufacture and supply of cast iron and cast aluminium gratings, balusters and engineered castings. The range is wide and varied. We will build for you whatever you want, whenever, for installation wherever. We’re contributing to inspirational renovations, innovative refits and exclusive new builds.

Being a truly British manufacturer, we have total control over the quality of the castings, as we own our own non-ferrous foundry and with our full pattern making facilities are able to take on commissioned design work. From raw materials to finished product all our staircase, balconies, railings, gates and security grilles are manufactured here in the UK.
Where it all began…

The story goes back to a man who wanted a spiral staircase for a barn conversion. He could not find anything on the market that was right, so he designed it himself and had it made up at a local foundry.

It was an excellent piece of work. When others saw it, they wanted one for themselves, and before too long Richard Harding had the vision and drive to turn these one off projects into a thriving business – Cottage Craft Spirals.

To meet the specific demands of a core market Richard went on to found Tilleys London Castings, supplying London style cast stairs, railings and gates, as well as carrying out bespoke restorations of stair balustrades from a showroom in London.

Milton Aluminium Castings, a foundry in the West Midlands, was acquired in 2009. This ensured that the products would continue to be British made and quality controlled from start to finish.

In 2014 Richard drew together these three trading divisions of Harding Sales Ltd to create one new all-encompassing brand known as ‘British Spirals & Castings’. Truly a family business, Richard’s son Ben now work as part of the management team.

We are proud to be the largest manufacturer of bespoke cast spiral, straight and balconies in Europe. We offer the largest range of designs and diameters ensuring that we can provide a solution to meet your requirements. As evidence of our commitment to ensuring that our products are of the highest quality, we have been awarded CE accreditation, under European Legislation, which provides assurance to the client that our manufacturing process is to the highest standards. Very few manufacturers in our industry have achieved this accreditation. View the CE FCP Certificate and CE Welding Certificate.
Sustainability

Protecting the environment is important to us in our work. The aluminium we use when making cast spiral stairs is recycled and refined to British Standards specifications and all our wooden staircases are made using sustainable, kiln dried timbers. For every set of timber stairs that we build, we plant five new trees on the family farm.
The Team

British Spirals & Castings continues as a family run business, and has a dedicated team of 19 staff over 3 sites; with a range of skills and experience that cannot be rivalled. Many of our staff have been with us since leaving school and British Spirals and Castings run an apprentice programme to help support local employment and work closely with local community schools in providing invaluable work experience.

With a CE accreditation under European legislation and our fantastic specialists who also offer advice on Building Regulations, design ideas and layout services, we are the market leaders in the industry.
Expertise

You can rely on our specialist advice relating to all aspects of Building Regulations and we offer design ideas and layout services. Our bespoke CAD system allows us to provide dimensional drawing for all our clients and for our fabricators. Agnes Jones is a sculptor based in Glasgow who draws in steel to make linear pieces full of character. Translating pen drawings into steel, her work changes this very solid material into something that looks like it has been sketched in the air. From large public art sculptures to garden and homeware commissions, her work can be seen across the UK.

"I have worked as an art blacksmith for ten years now, and have always been led by drawing. Working with line drawing allows me to create pieces that are full of character, movement and narrative, and allows a structural material to seem like I have quickly sketched it in mid-air. I have been exploring how to use line more sparingly and simply, leaving the viewer to fill in form on their own. The location and area around each piece is important as the work is forced to interact with the shapes, movement and feel of a site."

Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug from our seams almost continually since Tudor times. All Bulmer bricks are hand made, using traditional methods of making, drying and are fired in a coal burning, down draught kiln. This helps to give the distinctive finish that blends so well with the originals. The process takes time - something to consider at the project planning stage.

We are a small family business continuing the traditions of brickmaking on this site dating back to the Middle Ages. Our facings and specials can be made with almost any texture, from coarse veined to smooth with some 150 different sizes o facing and a range of over 5000 special shapes, including all standard plinths, squints and copings, and extends to purpose made chimney bricks, terracotta, mullions, jambs, floor bricks, pamments, decorative plaques, garden edgings and a full range of rubbing blocks.

We work on large projects for the National Trust, English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces, but are just as proud of some of the small private work undertaken by individuals.
