Our members' generosity enables us to fight for the Victorian and Edwardian buildings people value. Every day, we work to protect Victorian and Edwardian buildings from demolition and destruction.
Our Conservation Advisers, guided by experts on our Southern Buildings Committee and Northern Buildings Committee, help local planning authorities and churches to avoid needless harm to Victorian or Edwardian buildings. The reuse of our wonderful historic buildings, rather than wasteful demolition and rebuild, is key to a sustainable future. Our input has saved landmark buildings ranging from St Pancras in London to the Albert Dock in Liverpool.
We run numerous events and visits, developed by our events committee, and publish books, journals and a membership magazine to entertain educate about our subject. The Victorian Society is an IHBC recognised CPD provider.
We have regional groups which run their own events and campaigns, click the links on the right hand side of this page find out more .
Join the Victorian Society to be at the front of the battle to save our heritage. Our members’ support is crucial to our work, every member matters in the fight to save the buildings we cherish.
We’ve been fighting to protect historic buildings since John Betjeman and Nikolaus Pevsner among others founded The Victorian Society in February 1958. Their aim was to preserve Victorian and Edwardian architecture and encourage research into the art and history of the period. You can read more about our history below.

My Shropshire based company is dedicated to the conservation of traditional brickwork in all its forms.
I undertake practical brickwork conservation projects, on a diverse range of traditional buildings and structures including small, rural vernacular cottages, boundary & garden walls, canal structures, Georgian and Victorian town houses - both listed and unlisted. My clients are sympathetic owners of traditional buildings, architects, building managers and conservation professionals who are passionate about their buildings.
They recognise the harm that inappropriate methods and modern materials such as cement mortars & renders have done, or can do, to traditional brick work and wish not only to retain the significance and character of their buildings but also to restore their functionality. Like me, they recognise the importance of an informed approach to the execution of repairs to traditional & historic buildings.

The Temple Trust is an historic buildings preservation trust for England and Wales. As a charity since 1994, our core activity has involved the rescue and preservation of our architectural heritage existing in the form of historic garden buildings and their settings. The Trust came into existence solely for the public benefit, and has since endeavoured to improve access to (and understanding of) these historic sites. For the purpose of saving those structures (and associated landscapes) deemed most at risk we aim to form partnerships with the owners of such buildings -- as well as with other national and local charities and community groups.
As a matter of priority we target particularly listed buildings within public parks and open spaces, and other sites with scope for continuous public access (for instance-- where there is a reasonable proximity to an established public footpath or other right of way) or where there is scope for negotiating managed public access. Since the inception of the Trust, our main role has been to initiate, promote, fund, implement, endow and generally act as a catalyst in various historic ‘buildings at risk’ projects. Projects have included The Gunnersbury Temple in London (1994 -1998), Garrick’s Temple to Shakespeare at Hampton (1996 -2004), and most recently the Cilwendeg Shell House in Pembrokeshire (beginning 2003). For more detailed information on The Temple Trust projects so far, or other historical background, please see below or you may wish to consult the following published sources:

McCurdy & Co.’s reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, in London, has established them as leaders in the field of authentic reconstruction of historic timber frame buildings. They carried out extensive research to establish the overall design and to ensure historical accuracy of all joints and details before fabricating and erecting the oak structure.
Other historic replicas and reconstruction carried out by McCurdy & Co. include houses, barns and farm buildings, medieval halls, shops and commercial buildings. These projects have been undertaken for various clients including Open Air Museums in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America, archaeological and preservation trusts, government bodies and commercial developments, corporate and private clients.
Using their specialist conservation skills and understanding of historic timber structures, McCurdy & Co. are able to undertake the research, design, fabrication and erection of any form of historic timber framed structure or building. Examples could range from a barn to a Guildhall, a medieval manor house to an Elizabethan Theatre. These can be an exact replica of an existing building, a fully researched and authentic reconstruction or a purpose designed new timber frame building.
Consultancy - Whether directly advising a building owner or working as part of a professional design team McCurdy & Co. is able to offer clients specialist consultancy advice and the benefit of more than 25 years of in-depth research and practical knowledge. Consultancy and advisory work can encompass structural surveys, record drawing and archaeological analysis, schedules of repair, maintenance programmes and quinquennial surveys. Working to the client’s brief and after consultation and liaison with conservation officers and English Heritage, this data is used to provide the detailed design and specification for a programme of timber repairs and reconstruction.
McCurdy & Co.’s comprehensive knowledge and expertise in all aspects of historic and contemporary timber frame construction are commissioned by key bodies such as the National Trust and English Heritage. McCurdy & Co. also advises architects and local authorities, various public and private clients, major developers, construction companies, institutions, trusts and museums in both USA and Europe.

Peter McCurdy sits on committees at both ICOMOS (The International Council of Monuments & Sites) and TRADA (The Timber Research and Development Association). The company is committed to advancing the understanding of traditional timber frame construction, the ongoing developments of techniques for repair and conservation and opportunities for new construction.
McCurdy & Co. runs in-house training in its own specialist workshops as well as organising seminars and CPD events around the UK. The team at McCurdy & Co. regularly contributes to accredited timber repair and conservation training courses for universities and national bodies whilst Peter McCurdy frequently lectures around the world.
McCurdy & Co. has more than 25 years experience on a variety of significant projects, which range from the Tower of London to the re-creation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The Company can offer clients a comprehensive range of services in the repair and conservation of historic timber frames and also new timber frames, complemented by specialist consultancy advice and a keen involvement in training and research. Principal areas of expertise are as follows:-
Conservation

Established in 1993, Capricorn Eco Timber are an innovative, specialist, eco-friendly Stafford based timber merchant, machinist and sawmiller delivering a bespoke service for claddings, beams, and decking to all parts of the UK and abroad.
Our forte is the supply of locally grown, naturally durable, sustainable, British timber species which can be used for exterior applications without the addition of potentially toxic preservative treatments normally needed to enhance their longevity.
These species grow naturally in the UK and the revenues have a direct benefit to our own UK economy, in addition to having a very small carbon footprint compared to the thousands of miles our previously traditionally supplied imported timbers have to travel.
As part of this ethos we are producing our own version of burnt timber cladding, “Tiga Wood” using British timber species. This technique of burning and charring timber has been used over the centuries by the Vikings and Ancient Britons and in other parts of the world to prolong the longevity of timber and is making a resurgence in modern Britain as a way of increasing the longevity, fire retardancy and aesthetic properties of locally grown British Larch cladding.

The Mumford & Wood story began in 1954 when two woodworking apprentices, Derek Mumford and Dennis Wood, formed their own business partnership, primarily undertaking refurbishment work in and around Essex.
Increasing demand in the following decades saw them move to larger premises in Ongar, Essex and subsequently on to the current base in Tiptree in the 1990s, during which time Mumford & Wood were the first manufacturer in the UK to install an automated window construction line.
With new design possibilities and efficiencies came an increasing focus on the architectural market, and the Conservation™ range was born, with Mumford & Wood producing the first fully factory finished double glazed sash window in the industry, and were also the pioneers of a system for recreating Georgian glazing bar styles.
A skilled and committed workforce form the backbone of this thriving business. A process of continuous upgrades and investment has ensured that increases in output and productivity have been possible, while implementing market-leading technology and innovation that dovetails with maintaining a reputation of quality and service.
Alongside the high-performance Conservation™ range now sits the elegant Classic™ collection of made-to-order timber windows and doors that feature a true glazing bar and slim panel glazing system. For buildings of great architectural significance and importance, the Heritage™ range of single glazed products is achieving its rightful place in some of this country's most famous and much-loved regal buildings.
All manufacturing is undertaken in Tiptree, Essex ensuring a responsible, sustainability ethos with innovation and flair.

The Traditional Architecture Group of the Royal Institute of British Architects was founded in 2003 in response to the growing number of architectural practices and architects in Britain that were building traditional buildings. It was clear that the cause of traditional architecture could be well served by forming a group with the expressed aim of promoting traditional architecture both within the profession and within the wider community. The TAG Constitution states:
“The aims of the society are to celebrate the highest achievements of the past as a living source for modern inspiration. The group seeks to work within architectural, planning and educational disciplines to promote the values of a traditional approach in architecture and design. The group will provide mutual support, a meeting point and a venue for the exchange of ideas for those individuals interesting in or practicing contemporary traditional architecture. Additionally, we also aim to support the diversity of individuals and correlated trades dedicated to supporting the knowledge of craft and design values associated with traditional architecture.”
Many people today yearn for a better quality of environment in their cities, towns and countryside. All too often, where changes do occur, the results represent a degradation of what was there before. We need to learn how to reshape our built environment in a way that reflects the desires and values of the community.
Traditional architects understand that buildings of the past are uniquely capable of satisfying people’s needs. In the past buildings were designed to be beautiful as well as well as functional. Architects were schooled in a tradition that had evolved over millennia - one that totally integrated the practical and aesthetic requirements of buildings.
Despite a century of mechanisation traditional skill and knowledge have never lost and some architects in Britain and elsewhere continued steadfastly to practise and develop traditional architecture. The members of this Traditional Architecture Group are heirs to this continuity.
Traditional architecture teaches us that by seeking to create and to recognise beauty we establish a contact with our own sense of humanity – a humanity that is shared by all. Traditional architecture comes in many different styles and forms, for it is produced by many different individuals and cultures and so variety is an essential aspect of it. But whatever its origins it is always accessible to all.
Traditionalists believe that, however much the times we live in might be subject to change, there are basic human values which do not change. Our values in respect of the built environment are an example of this. This is clear for when we look at great architecture of one hundred, five hundred, two thousand years ago its power is undiminished.
The Traditional Architecture Group is committed to developing the values established by long tradition and adapting them to the modern world. Traditionalism looks to the past only to see the future more clearly. In the new century traditional architecture is growing worldwide. Traditionalism is the solid, viable, long term future for architecture.

The Scottish Civic Trust was set up in 1967, to help people connect to their built heritage and take a leading role in guiding its development. In its infancy, it successfully campaigned for the restoration of Edinburgh’s New Town, was instrumental in the revitalisation of New Lanark and can also claim credit for bringing Doors Open Days to the United Kingdom.
Through supporting amenity groups, the Trust’s original objectives were:
- Well-informed public concern for the environment of town and country
- High quality in planning and in new architecture
- The conservation and, where necessary, adaptation for re-use of older buildings of distinction or historic interest
- Knowledgeable and therefore effective comment in planning matters
- The elimination of ugliness, whether resulting from social deprivation, bad design or neglect
Broadly speaking, we are still working towards the same objectives today.
We have a small staff team that works hard to achieve our objectives, working under the guidance of our Board. Everything we do centres around the following core values:
- We are robust and independent in advocating for Scotland’s places and spaces
- We are positive about the future of the built environment
- We lead thinking on Scotland’s civic spaces
- We collaborate across the heritage sector and beyond to develop ideas that tackle exclusion
- We support community groups looking after their locality
We are proud to represent Scotland’s civic sector and strive to ensure our amenity groups are active, empowered, and educated to make a difference in their locality.
We are fortunate to own our own eighteenth century townhouse in Glasgow, where we have maintained our offices since 1995. To celebrate 25 years of calling Tobacco Merchant’s House home, the Trust launched its “Written in Stone” campaign on 12th October 2020. The campaign seeks to establish a capital fund to cover the cost of future major repair works and ensure the preservation of this historic gem and the many stories held within its walls. We invite all with a passion for Scotland’s buildings and civic movement to contribute to the Written in Stone campaign by leaving a gift in their Will to protect the Tobacco Merchant’s House for future generations.
